Eventually, you'll not only be a better writer—you might actually enjoy writing. Just as a musician cannot deliver an inspired performance without first learning the rudiments of the craft and studying technique, once you've mastered the basics of writing, you'll be ready to let inspiration and imagination take you almost anywhere you wish to go. There is no formula or program for writing well. However, there are certain qualities that most examples of good writing share. Like any form of writing, essays come in many different types. Disagree with a popular opinion and wish to convince others to join you? They are immortalized because of the way the words were strung together and kept their audiences captivated. While this essay structure might not be flexible enough for more advanced topics, it comes in handy when speed is a factor, like during timed tests. The first and foremost of the many guidelines is how the author set's up the introductory sentence or better yet, the hook. Signs of Trouble A common structural flaw in college essays is the "walk-through" also labeled "summary" or "description".
Essay maps ask you to predict where your reader will expect background information, counterargument, close analysis of a primary source, or a turn to secondary source material.
