Innocence is a big element within this story. In the middle of his trip through the forest Young Goodman Brown begins seeing things and hearing noises. The young man seized it, and beheld a pink ribbon. Knowing that he was doing something wrong, Young Goodman Brown was paranoid about his wife finding out and therefore hallucinated the ribbon falling from the sky out of paranoia. The novel unfolds over a span of seven years in Puritan America during the seventeenth century. Moral justice is tested as the plot revolves around the sin of adultery. The author uses color to illustrate the significance and symbolism of the emblem "A," Roger Chillingworth, and Pearl Prynne. The evidence that Brown may never have the capacity to come back to the way his assumed mind of innocence is proposed by the way that the forest closes quickly behind him.

The dejection of the forest symbolizes a life without faith. The trail is long and blustery, which symbolizes the profundity Goodman Brown's conscious mind must travel far from guiltlessness to have the capacity to appreciate the evil that is in him, he knows the evil is within in but instead interprets it to the world like saying the whole word is evil instead of his, stating that nobody is good in the world. Goodman Brown is mindful of his evil nature and this is made clear when he expected that his faith is something that can be changed and later grabbed voluntarily.

The darkness that is in Goodman Brown's heart speaks to his portrayal of the forest. The wearisome state of mind looks somewhat like Brown as the depictions turns out to be more distinctive the more profound he walks into the forest. Goodman Brown through his own evil nature drives himself into a dream where he is cut from humankind with just the devil as his…. This story shows many types of symbolism. For example, Faith is Young Goodman Brown's wife is an symbol for Young Goodman's Brown faith. Although Brown dies a bitter man, blaming the wickedness and hypocrisy of others, he leaves his Faith first. The name Young Goodman Brown, symbolizes the innocence of young, good men, who are all tempted and to some extent all give in. The forest, Puritans believed the woods to be the….

The pink ribbons are a symbolic figure representing faith and sin. The pink ribbons symbolize faith and sin because if you mix the color of faith which is white and the color of sin which is red it makes pink, thus it give us the pink ribbons. When Goodman shows up the Devils meeting, there are a lot of familiar faces. There are good and bad people standing around, and faith is there as well. He screams to resist the temptation and everything and everyone vanishes and he is in another location as well. Hawthorne leaves us to believe that it is all a dream. Therefore, Faith must be very young and innocent. Contained in both stories is an issue where evil is present.

The evil that exposes the characters in the pieces is very different but effective. During these situations the characters alter their facades to reveal their true selves. It might even be said that the theme for these works is how the worst situation leads us to a quest of self discovery. This thought brings us to the idea that, sometimes evil has to become evident in order for us to truly understand ourselves and others. Within the story of "Young Goodman Brown", Hawthorne uses the image of Satan, in human form to represent evil. This kind faced Satan rapidly exhibits the evil among the people in the town of Salem. The character quickly reveals the true nature of the towns people by blatantly stating it.

This vast amount of information can not be fully comprehended by Goodman Brown. In his situation Brown could not accept the flaws he was presented with and could see nothing but evil in himself and others. This sudden realization of evil brought down his previously "pure" disposition, Brown was nothing but evil himself. Nathaniel Hawthorne's "Young Goodman Brown" is about an ordinary man who leaves his wife to go on a journey and along the way confronts evil and the devil. His venture into the forest is his archetypal journey. There are a few foreshadowing moments in the story which leads the reader to see how Goodman Brown subconsciously knew the evil he was going to do.

His wife, Faith, wore pink ribbons and explained to Brown that she did not want him to go on his journey because she had had terrible dreams. As he was on his way, he became aware that "as she spoke there was trouble in her face, as if a dream had warned her what work is to be done tonight. His wife, Faith, is an archetypal character that shows how Brown has faith, religiously speaking, but strays away from his faith while he literally strays from his wife when he returns. The pink ribbons she wears are the mixture of her innocence and passion.

The reader is reassured that Brown is set out to do evil when "Goodman Brown felt himself justified in making more haste on his present evil purpose. The road to the forest is a "dreary road, darkened by all the gloomiest trees of the forest" 1 and that is where Brown comes in contact with his guide, the devil. Brown sees all of the evils…. He feels he has committed an act that was uncharacteristic for his family. He believed…. It is a well known fact that a multitude of prominent people in history have gone down as either martyrs or terrorists.

John Brown happens to be a murderous fanatic. John brown risked his life as well as others. Brown also had nearly no support from slaves in his attempt to abolish slavery. Despite his efforts, and the reactions of the people in the nation he still underwent prosecution. Unfortunately, it is almost as if he died in vain. Her stark contrast from other children catches the attention of both her parents, Hester and Dimmesdale. Pearl serves as a result of their lust for each other. Pearl loses her wild character and ceases to be defiant of the world, displaying her new capability of feeling sorrow.

The forest, each character and their actions all have specific meanings that are critical to the interpretation of the story. HOME ESSAYS Young Goodman Brown Essay. This comes as a shock to him, but his own innocence is lost when he can no longer view those around him as pure and perfect. Symbolism is used with objects and motifs to demonstrate the overarching themes of the story. According to Hawthorne, what does the use of the pink ribbon and dream say about the loss of innocence?

Flying and turning into a beast is not feasible in reality, so this shows another clue that he may have been dreaming. Dreams show that the innocence may not have been real in the first place. He does this after he finds out that Faith has joined the stranger, so it is a form of denying the truth. In this case the loss of innocence results in the behavior that does not seem real. It shows the disbelief leading him to a state of insanity, and how he would have rather not known all of the sins that people have committed.

Goodman Brown has a hard time telling whether his time in the forest was a dream or reality near the end of the story Hawthorne Both answers are probable, so it means that either way his innocence would have been lost. Hawthorne uses the dream-like manner of the situation to show the inevitability of the outcome. The dream also represents how Goodman Brown wanted it to be false. He was apprehensive when finding out the real faces of the people in his town, and he wishes it was not true. Dreams are seen as elusive, and it adds a mysterious touch to the story. The illusory nature of the story tells that innocence would be lost no matter how the story ended, and that it is not lost willingly at.
